Package Design: Box Packaging

For this Illustrator assignment, we designed a paperboard carton. I found that designing a box need a strong logic unless it is easily to put the pattern on the wrong side.

DESIGN BRIEF

Elle Dee Cakes

Brand History:

The cake is a good choice for gift and not only is the sweetest way to convey love, friendship, and warmth but also suit for lots of occasions. Elle Dee which was founded by sisters Lisa and Joy provide delicate cakes to Toronto residents. In Elle Dee team, blending highly skilled cake designers, sculptors and artists who are able to apply their excellent idea to every cake.

Target Audience:

Married female between the ages of 25-34 who with high income. They live in urban areas. They like beautiful things and are considerate.

Concept:

People usually select a cake from shelves is depend on the flavor and design, yet cake as a gift, an elegant package for a cake is important. Elle dee’ s cakes are unique and luxurious, so I intend to design paperboard cases which can accentuate and consist of the content. This is a good moving advertisement to reach a multitude of people when customers carry the cake on their way. Further, to attract potential consumers’ attention along with to increase sales and visibility. Therefore, the package design will focus on brand identity and portable.

Strategy:

Keeping simple structure, dignified appearance and prominent display of Elle Dee logo to maintain the legibility of package and impress potential consumers easily.

Overall Message:

The best way to share happiness.

Retail Venue Environment:

Located in Pusateri’s food emporium. There are café and bakery in the neighborhood.
Elle Dee Cakes are on the top of cake cabinet.

Previous Design:

This brand doesn’t have its own package design. I bought an Elle Dee’s cake; the carton was from Pusateri’s and doesn’t suit with the cake. Furthermore, the ingredient information was stuck on the back of the receipt.

I designed 3 types of box and discussed with my instructor and peers. I got useful suggestions from them. Finally, I go with the 1st option.

Packaging:

The terms of legal regulations for food product package should include nutrition facts, ingredients and allergies. In Canada, all information should be written in both English and French.

Opening/closure type:

Tuck-end, skillet, sealed ends.

Visual hierarchy:

Font size.

The protection of package while on display or in transport: 

the secondary packaging with handle and window.
My packaging design is focused on showcase and portable.

Through this assignment, I learned how to measure a box for a real product. I got more familiar with Ai ‘s align panel. I used it to draw die line and key line for cutting and folding. Furthermore, I learned a function which I didn’t know before that is using Dimensions Script to add measurements for the box.
